About this specimen

Three pale rose calcite spears lean out from a crust of iron-brown and ochre rock, glassy enough that the matrix shows faintly through their bases. The points are sharp and undamaged, the faces stepped with fine growth lines, and a scatter of smaller crystals repeats the same form along the lower edge of the plate. The colour is soft, a blush rather than a saturated pink, and it warms noticeably under a lamp.

Daye, in Huangshi, Hubei, is a skarn-hosted copper and iron district, and its calcites often grow on exactly this kind of limonite-stained gangue; the rusty ground is part of the specimen’s character, not a flaw. Calcite is CaCO3, Mohs 3, with perfect cleavage in three rhombohedral directions, so keep fingers off the tips and never clean it with anything acidic — even weak vinegar will etch those faces dull.

The piece measures 4.3 × 3.6 × 3.3 cm and weighs 45 g, a size that suits a display box. No stand is fitted. What you see photographed here is the specimen that will be packed and sent.
