About this specimen
One crystal carries this piece: a steep peach-pink scalenohedron of calcite, translucent enough to pass light through its faces, leaning out at an angle from a wedge of clay-grey matrix. A short row of smaller crystals with the same dogtooth profile crowds in behind it, and a faint rusty blush drifts through the interior of the main point.
Calcite (CaCO3) wears more crystal habits than any other mineral, and the scalenohedron — the classic dogtooth — is the one collectors recognise instantly. The Daye orefield in Hubei turns out pale, warm-toned examples of exactly this cast, the colour carried by trace impurities rather than by any treatment. At Mohs 3, with perfect cleavage in three directions, calcite wants a soft cloth and no knocks; keep anything acidic well away from it, since even weak acid will etch the gloss off these faces.
The specimen measures 3.8 × 2.5 × 3.6 cm and weighs 26 g, sitting on the clear acrylic block visible in the pictures. Every image here is of this specimen and no other.
