About this specimen

A rounded loaf of waxy cream-white calcite wears a cap of silvery mica: dozens of small books and splinters set edge-on, glittering cold against the soft matte body below, with a seam of dark green-black material showing where the two meet. The calcite itself is a mass of small blunt crystals fused into rolling lobes — more candle wax than glass.

Xuebaoding, in Pingwu County, Sichuan, is the source most collectors know for scheelite and beryl riding on books of muscovite; calcite is the quieter companion, the late pocket-filling phase that arrives once the showier species have finished growing. Having both on one small piece is a fair sample of what those pockets actually contain. Calcite is CaCO3 at Mohs 3, softer than a copper coin, and its three cleavage directions mean it chips rather than scratches — store it where nothing can roll into it.

Overall 4.6 × 3.8 × 4.1 cm and 74 g, offered without a mount. The photographs record this single piece.
