About this specimen

Xuebaoding, Sichuan, quartz with mica and calcite at 6.4 cm and 69 g; a small cabinet piece. A slender, clear quartz crystal standing in a rough matrix of grey mica and white calcite, the three minerals the supplier lists.

Good quartz is about hexagonal prisms with clean terminations and the glassy lustre that lets a cluster catch light from every angle.

Mica books, silvery to bronze, are the usual companion of pegmatite minerals and add a flash of pearly lustre to the piece. Calcite is the most shape-shifting of common minerals: over 800 crystal forms have been described, and Chinese localities produce many of the best.

Xuebaoding in Pingwu County is the classic Chinese source of scheelite, aquamarine and cassiterite on muscovite, mined from high-altitude greisen veins.

The piece is small cabinet in size, 5.5 × 3.4 × 6.4 cm (2.17 × 1.34 × 2.52 in) and 69 g (2.4 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Carbonate: never clean with acid or vinegar.

Each specimen is individually photographed and catalogued before it is listed.
