About this specimen
Yunnan veszelyite at 2.9 cm; a miniature, supplied in the display box shown. Veszelyite in a deep ink blue grows in tufts across a pale crusted matrix, the colour so strong that the crystals read almost black where they cluster thickest.
Veszelyite is a rare hydrated copper-zinc phosphate that forms deep blue to blue-green crystals; the Laochang district of Yunnan is the best-known modern source.
Yunnan's copper and lead-zinc districts produce the azurite, malachite, pyromorphite, hemimorphite and blue aragonite that define Chinese secondary minerals.
The piece is miniature in size, 2.9 × 2.1 × 2.3 cm (1.14 × 0.83 × 0.91 in). Condition is otherwise as photographed.
