About this specimen
Two loose constellations of brassy pyrite ride high on the lilac faces of this small Yaogangxian group, dense enough on the largest crystals to catch the eye at once and thinning to single specks toward the edges. The fluorite beneath is soft violet at the core and fades to near-colourless at the crystal edges, and the cubes are heaped in shallow steps rather than cleanly terminated — an opening, overlapping habit that gives the group its flower-like outline.
Pyrite arriving on top of fluorite is a matter of timing: the sulfide crystallised later, from a cooler and more sulfur-rich fluid, settling onto faces that were already finished. FeS2 is cubic like fluorite but nothing like it in behaviour — metallic, hard, opaque, and here reduced to specks under a millimetre across. Keep the piece dry; pyrite minds damp air far more than fluorite does.
The group is 4.6 × 2.8 × 3.0 cm and weighs 45 g, displayed on the clear acrylic cube seen in the images. These frames record this cluster and no other.
