About this specimen
Inner Mongolia diopside-garnet-galena-apophyllite at 242 g; a small cabinet piece for the skarn-mineral collector. Lead sulfide present: wash hands after handling.
Diopside is a calcium-magnesium pyroxene forming green prismatic crystals in skarns and marbles.
Galena's silver-grey metallic lustre and cubic cleavage make the species instantly recognisable; wash hands after handling. Garnet crystallises as dodecahedra and trapezohedra, geometry that shows cleanly on well-formed crystals.
Inner Mongolia's Huanggang and Chifeng districts produce fluorite, calcite, garnet and rhodochrosite in a lustre and clarity that set the modern standard for Chinese carbonates.
By size it is small cabinet, 7.4 × 5.8 × 5 cm (2.91 × 2.28 × 1.97 in) and 242 g (8.5 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.
