About this specimen
DR Congo dioptase at 1.7 cm; a thumbnail, supplied in the display box shown. Dioptase in a saturated emerald green crusts the top of a small matrix piece, the short prisms glassy on every face and the green holding its depth even in the smallest crystals.
Dioptase is a copper silicate with an emerald-green colour so intense it was once mistaken for emerald; the Congo crystals are the standard.
The Katanga Copperbelt of DR Congo is the world's premier source of malachite, dioptase, chrysocolla and cobaltoan calcite.
By size it is thumbnail, 1.7 × 1.4 × 1 cm (0.67 × 0.55 × 0.39 in). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.
