About this specimen
Handan, Hebei, andradite garnet at 1.5 cm; a thumbnail single crystal, supplied in the perky box shown. One complete dodecahedral garnet crystal in dark chocolate brown, every face flat and sharp-edged, with a fine growth striation catching the light across the larger faces.
Chinese garnet localities in Fujian and Inner Mongolia produce crisp, lustrous dodecahedra on feldspar and quartz.
Andradite is the calcium-iron end of the garnet group; it grows as sharp dodecahedra and trapezohedra in skarns, usually honey-brown to black, and the green variety is called demantoid.
The skarn iron deposits around Handan in southern Hebei produce sharp andradite garnet dodecahedra, magnetite and calcite.
By size it is thumbnail, 1.5 × 1.5 × 1.5 cm (0.59 × 0.59 × 0.59 in). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.
