About this specimen

Fujian spessartine on feldspar at 6 cm; a small cabinet piece with a sawn base. The supplier did not record a weight.

Spessartine is the manganese-aluminium garnet, the species behind the orange to wine-red crystals that grow in granite pegmatite pockets with smoky quartz and feldspar.

Feldspar is the matrix of choice in Chinese pegmatite specimens: blocky cream to pale-orange crystals that set off the garnet, quartz and tourmaline growing on them. Garnet crystallises as dodecahedra and trapezohedra, geometry that shows cleanly on well-formed crystals.

Fujian is China's most productive fluorite province, and its granite-hosted veins also yield the garnet, quartz and calcite that fill modern collections.

By size it is small cabinet, 3.3 × 1.7 × 6 cm (1.30 × 0.67 × 2.36 in). Disclosed condition: a cut (sawn) base. The price reflects it and the photographs show the affected area. The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Each specimen is individually photographed and catalogued before it is listed.
