About this specimen
Nothing here was touched by a wheel. The calcite grew this way: a dozen and more rounded, honey-cream knobs crowded over one end of an olive-brown bladed matrix, each knob built from stubby crystals stacked until their outlines softened into a dome. Light gets a millimetre or two into the palest of them before it gives out, and the lower ranks pick up a faint tea colour from the rock beneath.
Rounded calcite of this kind forms where the mineral is deposited quickly and evenly, so growth spreads outward in every direction at once instead of racing along one axis into a point. Calcite is soft — Mohs 3 — and splits into rhombs under the slightest wrong pressure. It also etches on contact with anything acidic, so dust it with a dry brush and keep vinegar and citrus cleaners a long way from the shelf.
