About this specimen

A scatter of glassy calcite crystals rides across this broad Fujian plate, the largest close to 3 cm and cut with so many small bevelled faces that each throws light back in a different direction. Most carry a faint ice-blue cast; a few near the centre are nearly water-clear, and the group along the right edge is milkier, closer to frosted white. Beneath them the matrix is a fine grey druse, granular as coarse sand.

The habit is worth a second look: these are not simple rhombs but stubby, many-faced forms, several showing flat caps crossed by fine parallel striations. Calcite is CaCO3, Mohs 3, with perfect cleavage in three directions — a knock on a corner pops a flat cleavage face rather than chipping it, so lift the piece by its matrix and not by the crystals.

A substantial hand piece at 13.2 × 12.2 × 4.1 cm and 525 g, photographed loose against grey with no base fitted. Everything in the frame is this plate — no other specimen stood in for it.
