About this specimen
One crystal does all the work here: a pale rose calcite, the colour of the inside of a shell, with no matrix and no companion minerals to share the interest. The form is complex — a dozen faces meeting at shallow angles, some mirror-bright, others veiled by internal growth planes that read as fine parallel striae deep inside the stone.
Calcite (CaCO3) is trigonal and only Mohs 3, with perfect rhombohedral cleavage in three directions — a knock on an edge takes a flake, not a chip. Hubei has been sending out pink calcites for years; the tint comes from traces of manganese in the lattice, and manganese is also what makes many calcites respond to ultraviolet, though the strength varies from crystal to crystal. Hold a straight edge behind it and the doubled image gives away calcite’s famously strong birefringence.
