About this specimen

Yunnan pyrite-dusted iron concretion at 10.5 cm and 1266 g; a cabinet sphere formed by nature. Keep dry.

Pyrite grows as cubes, pyritohedra and octahedra with a brassy metallic lustre; Chinese pyrite is known for sharp, mirror-faced crystals.

Iron concretions are rounded iron-oxide nodules that grew around a core in sediment; Yunnan pieces are collected for their sculptural, sometimes pyrite-bearing forms.

Yunnan's copper and lead-zinc districts produce the azurite, malachite, pyromorphite, hemimorphite and blue aragonite that define Chinese secondary minerals.

The piece is cabinet in size, 10.5 × 10 × 7.8 cm (4.13 × 3.94 × 3.07 in) and 1266 g (44.7 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.

Every specimen here is photographed and catalogued individually before listing.
