About this specimen
Fifteen or more stubby quartz points radiate outward from a common root here, fanning wide enough that the spray is broader than it is tall. Not one is glassy: every prism face and termination wears a fine sandy druse of much later, smaller crystals, olive-tinted where it thickens near the base and thinning to near-white at the tips. A khaki granular crust caps the front, and the crystals beneath show milky and faintly greenish through the coating.
That second skin is the point of the piece. It records a later pulse of silica-bearing fluid arriving after the main crystals had stopped growing, nucleating in thousands of places at once instead of adding cleanly to the existing faces. The local material is called screw quartz for the stepped, twisted growth its prisms take on; here the effect is textural rather than glassy, and it wants raking light, not a spotlight. Mohs 7 throughout, coating included.
The spray measures 5.6 × 4.3 × 4.1 cm and weighs 60 g. The spray in the images is the spray you receive, acrylic display cube included.
