About this specimen
Cut from a single block of milky fluorite, this skull wears its own geology on its face. A granular crystal crust runs from the brow down across the cheekbone, one temple carries a wash of pale green, and the back of the cranium steps away in flat planes where the cutter followed the stone instead of fighting it. The eye sockets are deeply hollowed and the teeth scored in a clean grid.
Fluorite, CaF2, is cubic and only Mohs 4, but the real difficulty for a lapidary is its perfect cleavage in four directions: a misjudged stroke can pop a flake along a plane hidden inside the block. Those buried planes are what the flat facets across the skull are following, and they are also why the piece should be set down gently rather than knocked against a shelf.
It measures 8.9 × 6.4 × 7.6 cm and weighs 800 g — a solid two-handed object, photographed on a dark reflective surface without a stand. Every image on this listing is of this skull; no two cuttings come out the same.
