About this specimen

Across a palm-sized buff plate of sugary druse, aubergine-purple fluorite cubes lie scattered like counters left on a board. A tight colony of small pale-lilac cubes crowds the left edge; four or five much darker crystals drift across the open field, the largest of them close to black at the shoulders. Their faces are stepped and etched rather than mirror-flat, breaking the light into fine terraces.

The etching came after the crystals: late acidic fluids nibbled at the cube faces, and then a cream-coloured drusy blanket grew across the plate and lapped up around several of the cubes, half-burying them. That sequence is legible here in a way it rarely is on a tidier specimen, and it is what makes an etched Guizhou plate more rewarding to read than a glassier one. Fluorite is CaF2, Mohs 4, and parts easily along its octahedral cleavage.

The plate is generous for a hand piece at 12.2 × 8.9 × 4.3 cm and 575 g, and lies flat for display with no stand supplied. Each image shows this plate and this plate only.
