About this specimen

Look into the front face of this fluorite and a ghost looks back: a pale, frosted phantom suspended inside deep violet, its margins soft where the older crystal surface was sealed over. The main crystal is a single cube set corner-up, glassy outside, cloudy grey at the very centre of the phantom. Smaller lilac fluorite crystals cling to the upper corners, and greenish mica flakes with pinhead pyrite run along one edge.

Phantoms form when growth pauses. A thin film of impurity settles on the crystal surface, later fluorite carries on around it, and the old face stays sealed inside as a visible boundary. Yaogangxian in Hunan is a locality where purple fluorite regularly keeps that record legible at collector size. Fluorite is CaF2, Mohs 4, with perfect octahedral cleavage — press hard on a corner and it will part along a plane you cannot see.

The cube measures 4.3 × 3.3 × 3.0 cm and weighs 51 g. It is offered without a base, shown in hand for scale; the specimen photographed is the one that ships.
