About this specimen

Seen face on, this Yaogangxian fluorite is a small city of cubes: one broad crystal fills the centre while smaller cubes climb its upper shoulder in flights, giving the piece the gabled, house-like outline it is named for. Colour runs from near-black indigo across the top through grape and dusty rose towards the base, and a scatter of pale olive-green mica dusts the edges and seams.

The ledges work as a growth diary. Each one is a layer that spread across the face below and stopped short of its edge, and the darkest band marks the pulse of growth that trapped the most colour. Fluorite is soft at Mohs 4 and parts along octahedral planes, which is why collectors carry cubes this large by the matrix side rather than by a corner.

It measures 5.1 × 5.1 × 3.8 cm and weighs 120 g, a comfortable palm-sized piece photographed in hand for scale and offered without a stand. Every image on this page shows the crystal you will receive.
