About this specimen

Held against the light, this Beijing fluorite glows the colour of thick honey. Blocky crystals climb in stepped tiers along the whole 9.4 cm length of the piece, each one paling to straw where it thins and deepening to warm amber where the tiers pile up on one another. Down one flank the growth breaks into a milk-white crust, and that cool edge is what throws the gold into relief.

Yellow in fluorite comes from defects and trace impurities inside the CaF2 lattice rather than from any single colouring element, which is why the saturation shifts crystal by crystal across one cluster. The species sits at Mohs 4 and cleaves perfectly along four octahedral directions, so a knock to a corner lifts a clean triangular flake rather than leaving a scuff. Keep it off hard shelving and away from harder neighbours.

At 9.4 × 2.5 × 4.8 cm and 185 g this is a comfortable one-hand specimen, photographed between the fingers so the scale reads honestly. No stand is supplied. What ships is the piece in these photographs, nothing similar to it.
