About this specimen
Every cube on this Xianghuapu piece has grown in steps, one square terrace set back from the last, so the whole 13 cm wedge reads as a green staircase seen from above. Colour runs from pale celery along the thin edges to a saturated apple-green where the crystals stack deepest, and the faces pass light rather than stop it. A chalky white crust caps the apex, the one interruption in all that green.
Fluorite is calcium fluoride, CaF2, and what you have here is not a pair of crystals but dozens of individuals sharing a single orientation — which is why the terraces line up across the entire face. At Mohs 4 it scratches with a knife, and the perfect octahedral cleavage means a rap on a corner pops a triangular flake rather than dulling it. Handle it by the flanks, not the points.
13.2 × 6.1 × 7.6 cm and 525 g of solid fluorite, with no matrix at all, so the crystals are the whole object; it looks best lit from behind. The wedge in these photographs is the wedge that ships.
