About this specimen

Almost all the colour has been left out of this one. The dominant fluorite crystal is water-clear to milky, rising to a clean three-faced point, its interior crossed by pale veils that catch the light as faint silver sheets. Alongside it a smaller group of frosted white crystals huddles against the flank, dusted and cored with dark green chlorite that reads nearly black in shadow.

Colourless fluorite is less common in collections than the purple and green material because it advertises itself less, yet it is the honest state of CaF2 — every tinted crystal owes its colour to defects in this same lattice. The chlorite came in with the late fluids at Yaogangxian and settled on the crystals as they grew, which is why it appears trapped between them rather than perched on top. Mohs 4, cleaving readily in four directions, so support the whole piece when lifting.

At 5.8 × 4.1 × 2.5 cm and 60 g this is a compact miniature, photographed loose without a stand. The crystal in these images is the one reserved for this listing.
