About this specimen

Sea-glass green fills these fluorite cubes so evenly that light seems to pool inside them rather than pass through. The crystals grew in stepped parallel groups, edges running true, terminal faces slightly frosted where the last growth layer stalled; the uppermost cube fades almost to colourless. A low white druse of tiny crystals rings the base and holds the group like a setting.

Yaogangxian in Chenzhou, Hunan, is a tungsten mine before it is a fluorite mine, and its green material takes its tone from trace elements picked up as the CaF2 crystallised. Look into the cubes and you will find faint square outlines held deep in the glass — earlier crystal faces that kept on growing. At Mohs 4, with perfect cleavage in four octahedral directions, fluorite dislikes knocks and sudden temperature change.

The piece measures 6.1 × 6.4 × 4.1 cm and weighs 176 g, a comfortable one-hand size that sits steady on its druse-covered underside. No stand is fitted. What you see photographed is the specimen that will be packed and sent.
