About this specimen
Kunming, Yunnan, fossil snail with vivianite at 2 cm; a thumbnail, supplied in the display box shown. Vivianite darkens in light: keep it out of direct sunlight and store it in the dark.
Vivianite is a hydrated iron phosphate that grows as bladed, deep blue-green crystals; colourless when fresh, it darkens to indigo and finally near-black on exposure to light.
The phosphate and copper deposits around Kunming in central Yunnan yield vivianite, messelite and the secondary copper minerals of the Dongchuan belt.
By size it is thumbnail, 2 × 1.2 × 1 cm (0.79 × 0.47 × 0.39 in). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
