About this specimen

An olive-green crust of chlorite clamps onto the right flank of this single terminated quartz crystal, its surface a mass of small platy crystals that shift from pine-green to mustard as the light moves across them. The quartz itself is milky cream with a faint peach warmth, its interior crossed by pale veils and healed planes that flash at odd angles when the crystal is turned.

Chlorite is the usual green in Chinese quartz pockets, and it arrives in two ways: sealed inside the crystal as the drifting phantoms that earn the “garden quartz” nickname, or perched on the outside as a later growth, which is what happened here. The outside version is by far the more fragile — chlorite is soft and micaceous, and rubbing it will simply take it off. Rinse in plain water if it needs it and let it air-dry.

Small enough to close a hand around at 2.8 × 2.3 × 2.5 cm and 20 g, the crystal comes on the clear acrylic base pictured, seated on a bead of white putty. The photographs are of this crystal and no other.
