About this specimen

Meigu, Sichuan, garden quartz with epidote at 4.6 cm; a miniature. A water-clear quartz crystal with a garden of inclusions sealed inside: olive-green epidote needles and rusty orange patches spread through the lower half while the termination stays clear.

The inclusions in garden quartz are frozen mid-growth, which is why every crystal reads as a small, unrepeatable scene.

Epidote's deep pistachio to olive green and striated prism faces separate it from prehnite. Rock crystal is judged on termination quality, clarity and how the crystals sit together, and the Chinese localities have raised the bar on all three.

Meigu County in the Liangshan prefecture of Sichuan is known for green phantom quartz with epidote and chlorite inclusions.

Dimensions place it in the miniature range, 4.6 × 3.9 × 3.8 cm (1.81 × 1.54 × 1.50 in). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.

Specimens are photographed and catalogued one at a time before they reach this page.
