About this specimen
Half sky, half cloud. The upper part of this large Brazilian quartz sphere is glass-clear, and the lower part is filled with a dense bank of fluffy white mist whose top edge is almost perfectly level, so the ball looks like a bowl filled to the brim with cotton. That is the look the Chinese trade calls a 'treasure bowl', a form traditionally regarded as gathering abundance.
Close up, the cloud is made of fine, sparkling, cotton-like inclusions that catch the sun, with a few icy feathers trailing below. A small rainbow flashes near the top from one side. It is polished and and at this size the effect is striking from across a room.
