About this specimen

Two great green domes swell from the right side of this Hunan plate, their surfaces built from thousands of tiny stepped fluorite crystals packed so densely that each mound reads from across a room as one sea-green cushion. To the left the piece changes character completely: cream-white blades fan out in overlapping plates, crusted with sugary druse, one sheltering a dark bladed crystal.

Growth of this kind proceeds by repeated nucleation on a curved surface, each new generation of minute cubes and octahedra taking root on the last — which is what produces the stepped, cauliflower texture instead of a smooth ball. Nothing here has been shaped, ground or polished. Fluorite is Mohs 4, and on a surface of thousands of terraces careless cleaning does real damage: blow dust off, do not wipe it.

It is a substantial plate — 15.2 × 10.2 × 10.2 cm and 1120 g — sitting square on the cream matrix at its base, green side facing front, so no stand is needed. The camera was pointed at this plate, and this plate is what leaves the shelf.
