About this specimen

One glassy fluorite crystal owns this specimen — rounded, gem-transparent, the palest lilac, with a soft purple phantom floating at its core — and around it Inner Mongolia staged a full theatre set: plumes of steel-black marcasite fan out like frozen feathers, edged in silver against patches of ochre-stained matrix.

The pairing is what makes the piece. Fluorite’s watery translucence against dark metallic marcasite is as strong a contrast as the mineral kingdom offers, and here both sides arrive undamaged: the fluorite’s faces clean and lens-like, the marcasite plumes complete to their tips.

Backlit, the crystal turns into a lilac lamp and the phantom sharpens into view; front-lit, the marcasite takes over with silvery flash. It measures 8.1 × 6.6 × 4.1 cm, weighs 310 g, and displays well from either broad face. The photographs show the exact specimen.
