About this specimen
Only the front of this skull ever met a tool. The back of the cranium is raw pocket wall — a crust of sugary white crystal stained apricot with iron, standing up behind the polished face like a crest — and everything forward of it is fluorite: bottle-green through the temple and jaw, water-pale across the brow, with one dark green patch sitting inside the eye socket where the cut went deepest.
Fluorite is a hard stone to carve and an easy one to ruin. Mohs 4, and perfect cleavage on all four octahedral directions, so a tool that catches wrong lifts a triangular flake off the cheekbone instead of a shaving. The colour banding crossing the face is the ghost of the original cube growth: each green and colourless layer records a change in the fluid the crystal grew from, and cutting across them is what brings them to the surface.
8.9 × 5.1 × 7.6 cm and 907 g, just under a kilo, and it wants two hands. It is photographed on a plain dark reflective surface with no stand. The skull pictured is the skull you get, drusy crest and all.
