About this specimen

The dividing line runs clean across this piece. Above it, a white cap of bladed calcite, its crystals radiating in flat rosettes and splayed sheaves with the texture of torn paper. Below, a heavy mass of translucent fluorite runs smoky grey to grey-violet, milky in patches, its cleavage steps catching light in broad flat flashes. At the top right corner the fluorite darkens to olive brown-green where the crystal is thickest.

Two soft minerals on one specimen makes for careful handling: calcite is Mohs 3 and parts on three easy planes, fluorite is Mohs 4 with four cleavage directions, and the blades on the cap are thin enough to snap under a thumbnail. Dry-brush the calcite and stop there. The fluorite deepens with the thickness of the mass rather than in bands, reading almost black through the widest part and lightening to smoke at the edges.

It measures 7.6 × 3.3 × 2.5 cm and weighs 108 g. Each photograph is of this piece, held in the hand so the calcite cap and the fluorite body appear in one frame; no mount is included.
