About this specimen
Sea-green fluorite cubes interlock across the crown of this Fujian cluster, and most of them hold a smoky grey core that shows through the paler outer zones like a shadow suspended in glass. Faces range from wet-bright to lightly frosted, and the whole growth rests on a dark grey band of host rock.
Zoning of this kind is a record of the fluid the crystals grew from: colour centres switch on and off as chemistry and temperature shift, and each stage is sealed under the next, so a single cube can carry a grey heart inside a green shell. Fluorite (CaF2) is Mohs 4 with perfect octahedral cleavage, soft enough that a careless knock takes a corner away cleanly rather than bruising it.
Solid in the hand at 9.4 × 6.6 × 5.6 cm and 385 g, unmounted. The photographs document this individual cluster.
