About this specimen
Acid-etched by late pocket fluids, this Shangbao fluorite wears a surface like carved layers of slate — hundreds of paper-thin growth lamellae exposed in relief across a deep violet crystal. Then, through a clean window in the etching, the interior appears: saturated royal purple, glassy and untouched, a glimpse of what the crystal is beneath its weathered coat.
The fluorite sits on a mound of cream-to-honey dolomite whose warm tone flatters the cool purple above. Etched fluorite divides collectors from casual buyers — the texture is an acquired taste that rewards close looking, and Shangbao’s etched purples, with their contrast of matte skin and gem core, are among the best arguments for acquiring it.
