About this specimen
Barely wider than a large coin, this thumbnail carries a whole thicket of small quartz points — colourless at the tips, faintly lilac where they crowd together — and pushing up through the thicket are several pale pistachio-green fluorite crystals, rounded and glassy. At the right the piece turns violet where a wedge of purple fluorite breaks the surface with dark inclusions caught along its edge.
Small Fujian pieces repay more attention than their size suggests, because the growth order is written plainly on them: fluorite first, quartz afterwards and over the top, the points leaning against the older crystals rather than under them. There is a hardness lesson too — the quartz spires are Mohs 7 and the fluorite between them Mohs 4, so cleaning pressure lands on the wrong mineral. A soft brush and lukewarm water is the whole procedure.
The thumbnail measures 3.0 × 3.0 × 1.5 cm and weighs 15 g, mounted on putty on a clear acrylic block for the photographs. You are buying precisely the piece pictured.
