About this specimen
Mint green drifts through snow-white in the block this skull was cut from, and the carver let the colour fall where it wanted: a pale band crosses the brow and cheek, deeper green pools inside the eye socket, and the cranium is mottled the way weather looks from an aircraft. Cheekbone, nasal opening and a full row of incised teeth are cleanly defined, and the surface holds a soft satin polish rather than a mirror gloss.
Fluorite (CaF2) is an awkward stone to work. At Mohs 4 with perfect cleavage in four directions it will part along an octahedral plane under the wrong pressure, so a head at this scale is ground slowly. The white zones are more granular than the green and take a different finish, readable along the jawline where the green stays translucent several millimetres deep.
The carving is 10.2 cm front to back, 8.9 cm wide and 8.9 cm tall, weighing 1349 g — a solid 1.3 kg. It sits level on its own jaw and needs no support; no base is included. Photographs are of this exact carving.
