About this specimen
In profile this skull reads as much geode as portrait. The quartz is milky white and sugar-textured, every surface crusted with microscopic terminations that scatter rather than reflect, while charcoal-grey shadows drift beneath the cranium and temple — darker mineral clouds sealed inside the stone long before anyone touched it. The lapidary work is deliberately restrained: a hollowed orbit, a bridged nose, a row of blocked teeth, and then the material is left to be itself.
Quartz (SiO2) is trigonal and Mohs 7, hard enough that a crystallised surface survives shaping instead of rounding off under the wheel. Carving a vug-lined block is a gamble of a particular kind: the face has to be found around whatever hollow the stone already contains, and here the druse has been kept rather than ground flat, so the finished piece keeps both a profile and a pocket.
The skull measures 7.6 × 4.8 × 6.1 cm and stands unaided. It was photographed on a black reflective surface with no stand; what you see in these images is the piece that ships.
