About this specimen

The entire display face has set into a frozen surf: rounded hemimorphite cushions swell and overlap across the plate, all of it under a frosted, sugar-fine druse that scatters light rather than passing it. Colour runs from chalk-white at the upper rim into pale sky-blue, deepening to quiet turquoise in the hollows. Only at the outer edges does the dark grey-green host show, a thin line framing the blue.

Hemimorphite is a hydrous zinc silicate, Zn4Si2O7(OH)2·H2O, formed in the oxidised upper levels of zinc deposits; the blue tone in the Yunnan material is generally credited to traces of copper carried in with the zinc. At Mohs 4.5 to 5 the crust is reasonably tough, but the botryoidal surface is a dust magnet and the fine druse dulls if it is rubbed — blow it clean rather than wiping it.

The plate spans 8.9 × 3.0 × 8.9 cm and weighs 221 g, flat-backed, shallow enough for an easel or a drawer. The piece pictured is the piece sold; no two of these plates repeat.
