About this specimen
Xuebaoding, Sichuan, scheelite with mica at 8.5 cm and 367 g; a cabinet piece. A honey-yellow scheelite crystal set into a broad bed of golden-tan mica rosettes, the mica covering the whole face and the scheelite glassy.
Scheelite is calcium tungstate, forming orange to honey-coloured bipyramids with a greasy lustre and a bright blue-white fluorescence under short-wave UV.
Mica forms pearly hexagonal books that catch the light between the other crystals.
Xuebaoding in Pingwu County is the classic Chinese source of scheelite, aquamarine and cassiterite on muscovite, mined from high-altitude greisen veins.
