About this specimen
Xuebaoding, Sichuan, scheelite with quartz and mica at 4.3 cm and 33 g; a miniature. A honey scheelite crystal beside a clear quartz point on a base of mica, the scheelite glassy and the quartz sharp.
Scheelite is calcium tungstate, forming orange to honey-coloured bipyramids with a greasy lustre and a bright blue-white fluorescence under short-wave UV.
Quartz is the most collected mineral on earth for good reason: sharp hexagonal prisms, bright terminations and endless variation between localities. Mica forms pearly hexagonal books that catch the light between the other crystals.
Xuebaoding in Pingwu County is the classic Chinese source of scheelite, aquamarine and cassiterite on muscovite, mined from high-altitude greisen veins.
Dimensions place it in the miniature range, 4.3 × 2.1 × 3 cm (1.69 × 0.83 × 1.18 in) and 33 g (1.2 oz). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
