About this specimen

The tall crystal here is quartz, not fluorite: a single milky-to-clear prism, sharply terminated, its faces sanded over with a fine drusy crust that leaves the column translucent rather than glassy. Perched on the right shoulder, a small gemmy fluorite group glows pale blue with a violet heart — two centimetres of concentrated colour against ten of frosted white.

The growth order is legible at a glance. The quartz prism finished its faces first; a later pulse of fluorite-bearing fluid then dropped this small crystal group onto one completed shoulder, which is why the fluorite sits on the quartz instead of inside it. Quartz (SiO2) is Mohs 7 and forgiving; the fluorite is CaF2 at Mohs 4 with perfect octahedral cleavage, so it is the part worth protecting. Hold the specimen low on the prism.

It stands 9.9 cm tall on a 4.3 × 3.0 cm footprint and weighs 170 g — a comfortable one-hand size, shown in the hand for scale. These photographs are of this individual piece.
