About this specimen
Water-clear fluorite sits at the centre of this small plate like a drop of frozen rain, its faces rounded and stepped rather than sharply cubic, with faint smoky veils inside. Smaller colourless crystals ring it on both sides, and the whole group is bedded in a dark green-black matrix that sparkles with fine white druse wherever the light rakes across it.
Colourless fluorite asks more of a specimen than coloured material does: with no pigment to hide behind, every internal fracture and cleavage plane is on show, and here they read as soft veils, not bright breaks. Fluorite (CaF2) is Mohs 4 with perfect cleavage in four octahedral directions, which is why even undamaged pieces show faint internal steps. Some fluorite fluoresces under ultraviolet light and some does not; it varies pocket by pocket, so treat any glow as a bonus rather than a promise.
The plate measures 4.6 × 2.0 × 3.3 cm and weighs 65 g. It was held in the hand against a plain grey ground for these photographs, with no stand; the specimen shown is the one sold.
