About this specimen
Anhui, malachite with azurite at 3 cm; a miniature. Malachite in deep green covers the piece in fine fibrous growth, with a patch of white crystals crusting the upper edge where the copper mineral thins out.
Velvety, fibrous or botryoidal, malachite reads as pure copper green; the best pieces show silky radiating fibres under magnification.
Azurite is copper carbonate in its deep-blue form; it often alters to malachite, so blue-and-green combinations are the natural pairing.
Anhui in eastern China produces quartz, calcite and fluorite from small mines in the Dabie and Huangshan mountain belts.
Dimensions place it in the miniature range, 3 × 2.8 × 1.3 cm (1.18 × 1.10 × 0.51 in). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.
