About this specimen
Anhui, malachite with azurite at 3.2 cm; a miniature. Fibrous green malachite fills most of the surface with deep blue azurite crystals standing out from it in small clusters, and a patch of white carbonate at the top edge.
Velvety, fibrous or botryoidal, malachite reads as pure copper green; the best pieces show silky radiating fibres under magnification.
The saturated blue of azurite stands out among the common minerals, and Chinese and Congolese material now sits alongside the classic Moroccan finds.
Anhui in eastern China produces quartz, calcite and fluorite from small mines in the Dabie and Huangshan mountain belts.
By size it is miniature, 3.2 × 2.4 × 2.1 cm (1.26 × 0.94 × 0.83 in). The specimen is otherwise sold in the condition shown.
