About this specimen

Five dark bottle-green mounds crowd against one another on this Congo malachite, their skins pitted and matte rather than glassy. At the right edge one botryoid has been opened, and the break flares to a brighter fibrous emerald — the radial crystal bundles that give polished malachite its banded eyes, here left exactly as they grew.

Malachite, Cu2CO3(OH)2, forms in the oxidised cap above copper orebodies, laying down shell after shell around a nucleus until the surface reads as a bunch of grapes. It is soft at Mohs 3.5 to 4 and it reacts with acids, so keep it dry, dust it with a soft brush, and never let it near an ultrasonic bath.

The specimen measures 4.6 × 2.3 × 2.5 cm and weighs 31 g, seated on a clear acrylic block with green mounting tack. What you see in the photographs is the piece that ships.

Can I return it?

Yes — there is a 14-day return window.
