About this specimen
Two blades cross at close to a right angle in the middle of this thumbnail: one climbing vertically to a ragged, split termination, the other reaching out sideways like a low branch. Their surfaces are silver-grey shot with faint blue and bronze iridescence, and a cream-white crust of barite banks up hard against the right flank.
Barite, BaSO4, is a constant companion to stibnite in Hunan’s antimony veins. It crystallises early and the sulfide then grows through and over it, which is why the crust here wraps the blades instead of lying beneath them. The stibnite itself is lath-shaped rather than needle-thin, a habit that shows off the perfect side cleavage particularly well — and at Mohs 2 those mirror faces mark under a fingertip, so keep handling to the matrix.
Small at 4.6 × 2.0 × 1.3 cm and 10 g, it is set on white putty on the clear acrylic cube seen here. Down to the split at the top, every detail in these photographs belongs to this one specimen.
