About this specimen

Xuebaoding, Sichuan, aquamarine with mica, feldspar and quartz at 5.8 cm and 77 g; a small cabinet piece. A stout pale blue aquamarine crystal sitting on a base of white feldspar and mica with a small quartz point beside it, the beryl frosted and translucent.

Glassy hexagonal prisms and a sea-blue tone define the aquamarine variety.

Mica forms pearly hexagonal books that catch the light between the other crystals. Feldspar is the matrix of choice in Chinese pegmatite specimens: blocky cream to pale-orange crystals that set off the garnet, quartz and tourmaline growing on them.

Xuebaoding in Pingwu County is the classic Chinese source of scheelite, aquamarine and cassiterite on muscovite, mined from high-altitude greisen veins.

By size it is small cabinet, 3.8 × 3 × 5.8 cm (1.50 × 1.18 × 2.28 in) and 77 g (2.7 oz). Condition is otherwise as photographed.

Specimens are photographed and catalogued one at a time before they reach this page.
