About this specimen
Yunnan epidote with quartz and prehnite at 2.8 cm and 22 g; a miniature. A pale green prehnite ball sitting between clear quartz crystals and a mass of dark green epidote.
Epidote forms pistachio-green prismatic crystals, often striated, and is a classic companion of quartz and feldspar in Chinese skarn deposits.
Good quartz is about hexagonal prisms with clean terminations and the glassy lustre that lets a cluster catch light from every angle. Prehnite forms botryoidal and fan-shaped aggregates of pale green crystals with a waxy lustre; Sichuan produces some of the best.
Yunnan is China's most mineralogically diverse province, source of the pyromorphite, azurite and blue aragonite that have become collector favourites.
