About this specimen
Hunan pyramid calcite with pyrite at 12 cm and 624 g; a large cabinet plate. A plate covered in pale grey scalenohedral calcite points, the pyramid calcite the supplier names, each partly coated in a rusty brown pyrite film that flashes iridescent colours.
Calcite is the most shape-shifting of common minerals: over 800 crystal forms have been described, and Chinese localities produce many of the best.
Pyrite is the most collected metallic mineral, and the best pieces combine sharp form with a lustre that has not dulled; store it dry to keep it that way.
Hunan is the heartland of Chinese mineral collecting, home to Yaogangxian, Xianghualing and Shangbao, and its fluorite, calcite and sulfides are the benchmark for the country.
