About this specimen

Dozens of water-clear calcite crystals stud the face of this piece, from beads a few millimetres wide up to one blocky central crystal close to two centimetres, its faces stepped and glassy enough to throw a highlight. They sit on a matrix the colour of pond water — a grey-green skin of chlorite over darker rock — and the contrast between drab groundmass and glassy growth is the whole of the appeal.

Calcite is calcium carbonate, CaCO3, and it is the shape-shifter of the mineral kingdom: more documented crystal forms than any other species, from razor scalenohedra to the squat, rounded habits seen here. It is soft at Mohs 3, with perfect cleavage in three oblique directions, so a knock tends to pop a clean rhomb off a crystal rather than chip it. Keep it clear of anything acidic; even vinegar fumes will etch the gloss off the faces.

The specimen is 7.6 × 4.6 × 6.6 cm and weighs 215 g, resting on a flat broken base that needs no support. The images here record this exact piece, crystal for crystal.
