About this specimen
Romania, rhodochrosite with quartz at 2.7 cm; a miniature, supplied on the acrylic stand shown. Rhodochrosite in a soft pink covers the top of the piece as a rounded botryoidal cap, with the grey quartz it grew on showing underneath around the whole rim.
Rhodochrosite is manganese carbonate, and its raspberry-to-rose colour is entirely natural; Chinese material from Guangxi and Inner Mongolia has become a collector favourite.
Good quartz is about hexagonal prisms with clean terminations and the glassy lustre that lets a cluster catch light from every angle.
Romania's Baia Mare and Cavnic mining districts in the Carpathians are historic European sources of quartz, calcite, stibnite and sulfosalt minerals.
The piece is miniature in size, 2.7 × 2 × 1.8 cm (1.06 × 0.79 × 0.71 in). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.
